Here in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia we are plagued with stormwater issues in dealing with our designs. Our speaker Justin Shafer is an Environmental Engineer with the Norfolk Dept of Public Works. As a Planner and scientist Justin tries to assist designers to find ways to better utilize stormwater and green infrastructure projects to meet specific goals such as coastal resiliency, stormwater quantity control, habitat restoration, recreational access, and beautification.
Our program will focus on the steps to meet TMDL water quality requirements and how the City of Norfolk Stormwater program can help identify projects, work with designers to carry them through a conceptual phase, coordinate grant or capital funding for the Owner, and then to hand the project off to the Public Works Civil Engineers who manage the full design, permitting, and construction management.
Come with your own ideas and issues to discuss with Justin and fellow architects, engineers and other construction professionals to join in fellowship and joint problem solving the Stormwater Management Design Issues of Hampton Roads.
Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Holiday. We had a delightful time at our Holiday Meeting in December; had a bit of a scramble when we discovered our planned venue had been rented out for a private party, but the Zia Marie down the street was a wonderful refuge for our group to celebrate, gather toys for tots, and cheer the coming new year! The food was great and reasonable too!
We are half way through our CSI year as we begin the start of the new calendar year. I have had the pleasure of having been at a presentation given by our speaker this month at a Business Association meeting. I highly recommend coming to learn how the steps to navigate the public works processes to achieve a result that is beautiful, functional and of benefit to your project and the environment.
This month we are also looking to the future with elections for FY20 for the Chapter and the Region. The Chapter slate of officers will be presented at the January meeting with elections in February. Region and Institute election information will be coming to CSI Members soon by email.
Current planning includes panel discussions to include masonry practices, job site safety requirements, storm water regulations, and roof repair/replacement topics; technical programs in more depth than your typical lunch and learns for innovative products and topics of concern such as sea level rise, and water conservation. We also want to include more site visits of interesting projects and historical locations in our area; subject to the venue, some of the site visits may modify the dates listed below, so check the Facebook and LinkIn pages for the latest information as it develops.
